soil carbon

As plants decay, part of their carbon is converted by microorganisms into soil organic matter. Carbon in soils makes up approximately 2/3 of the terrestrial carbon pool. The graph on the right shows the distribution of active carbon around the world. Note that boreal soils alone are important component of the global carbon pool. Data from the IPCC Third Assessment Report.
