losing permafrost

Forty years of permafrost monitoring in northern Manitoba, Canada indicates that permafrost within 1.5 m of the surface degraded significantly from wet, poorly drained landscapes. Soil drainage and moisture availability play a significant role in the stability of near-surface permafrost.

Data from Velduis H., Eilers R.G., and Mills G.F. (2002) Proc. 17th World Congress of Soil Science, Bangkok, Thailand.
