Collaborative research to characterize the carbon response to permafrost thaw will begin in the summer of 2007

NSF recently funded a collaborative proposal between the USGS, Purdue, the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and Alaska Ecological Surveys to study the effects of premafrost degredation on carbon and water. See this new project's webpage for more information.

Molecular investigations into permafrost-protected soils begins in April, 2007.

Mark Waldrop, Jennifer Harden, Rob Streigl, George Aiken, and Kim Wickland were recently funded through a geology venture capital fund to investigate the vulnerability of permafrost soil carbon to decomposition. More information about this project can be found here.
